Google Cloud Network Service Tiers: Premium vs Standard Cost

The Premium versus Standard Network Service Tier choice trades network performance for egress cost. Premium rides Google's global backbone and is the default. Standard hands traffic to the public internet sooner and costs less. This guide gives you the per-GiB scorecard and the rule for which to use.

For cost, choose Standard Tier when egress is latency-tolerant and regional, because it is priced below Premium in every band, often roughly 30 percent cheaper, by handing traffic to the public internet at the egress region instead of Google's backbone. Choose Premium Tier when you need low latency, global load balancing, and Google's network end to end. Premium is the default, so most estates are paying Premium rates on traffic that would run fine on Standard. The rule is to move latency-tolerant egress to Standard and keep Premium for user-facing global services.

The one rule that matters most

Default is Premium, so audit before you assume. Move latency-tolerant, regional egress such as batch transfer, internal tooling, and dev traffic to Standard Tier, where it costs roughly 30 percent less. Keep Premium for latency-sensitive, global, user-facing services that need Google's backbone and global load balancing. The expensive mistake is paying Premium rates by default on traffic that never needed the backbone.

What are Premium and Standard Network Service Tiers?

Network Service Tiers are Google Cloud's two options for how egress traffic travels and how it is priced. Premium Tier carries traffic on Google's high-performance global backbone for as long as possible before handing it to the public internet, and supports global load balancing; it is the default. Standard Tier routes traffic over the public internet from the region where it egresses and supports regional load balancing only. The networking experience and the price both follow from that routing difference: Premium spends more time on Google's network and costs more, Standard spends less time on it and costs less, per the Network Service Tiers overview.

How much cheaper is Standard Tier?

Standard Tier is priced below Premium in every egress band, commonly around 30 percent cheaper for typical volumes. For North America internet egress, Premium Tier is about 0.12 US dollars per GiB for the first 1 TiB, dropping to about 0.11 and then 0.08 US dollars per GiB at higher volumes, while Standard Tier gives the first 200 GiB free and then runs about 0.085, 0.065, and 0.045 US dollars per GiB as volume rises, per the Network Service Tiers pricing documentation. On a workload pushing 5 TiB of egress per month in North America, the difference between the tiers is on the order of 155 US dollars per month. Rates vary by region and change over time, so confirm the current per-GiB figures for your region in that documentation before modeling.

When is Standard Tier cheaper and good enough?

Standard Tier is cheaper and good enough whenever egress is regional and latency-tolerant. Batch data transfers, internal tools used by staff in or near the serving region, dev and test traffic, log shipping, and any workload where users and the egress region are close, all run fine on the public internet and do not need Google's backbone. For these, Standard delivers the same data for roughly 30 percent less, and the free first 200 GiB per month makes low-volume regional egress effectively free. The performance difference is real but irrelevant for traffic that was never latency-sensitive, which describes a large share of most estates' egress.

When is Premium Tier worth the cost?

Premium Tier is worth the cost for global, latency-sensitive, user-facing services. When you serve users worldwide, rely on global load balancing to route them to the nearest healthy backend, or run interactive applications where every millisecond of latency affects experience or conversion, the time traffic spends on Google's backbone is a feature you are paying for on purpose. Premium also gives more consistent performance across regions, which matters for global products. Which tier should you choose?

Choose by traffic profile, service by service, not as a blanket default. Route latency-tolerant, regional egress through Standard Tier to capture the roughly 30 percent saving, and keep Premium Tier for the global, latency-sensitive, user-facing services that actually benefit from Google's backbone. Tier can be set at the project level and overridden per forwarding rule or address, so you can run a mixed estate: Standard for batch and internal traffic, Premium for the customer-facing edge. The wrong choice is leaving everything on the Premium default and paying backbone rates on traffic that never touches a user.
